the september starlight criterium series -- race one

Oh, this was very fun.

And not just because I won (and I don't feel one bit bad about winning over a bunch of college students--seeing as two them can now regularly dispatch me with ease on the TNR course).

It's the perfect course. Fast, lots of turns, well-lit (considering), and absolutely no traffic. There's not even really houses around. It's perfect.

Anyway, your results from the inaugural run, September 3:

1. goatsauce
2. Mike Maret
3. Jon Marshall
4. Cody Wertz
5. Alex Krayo

And the point standings to date:

1. goatsauce (5 pts)
2. Mike Maret (3 pts)
3. Jon Marshall (2 pts)
4. Cody Wertz (1 pt)
5. Alex Krayo (1 pt)

Remember, points are awarded in reverse Fibonacci sequence (starting with 1) based on how many riders finish. So winning a race with a lot of people is worth way more than winning a race with just a few, but everybody who shows up gets a point.

It should also be mentioned that this was Alex's first ever road ride, on a borrowed bike, riding old-fashioned toe-clips. He did awesome.

The podium shot:

(Notice I'm wearing the yellow series leader's jersey. It's a yellow reflective vest, apropos for the venue, methinks. And it has a star on it, because the promoters are just that cool.)

A special thanks to Ms. Valerie for playing race official and keeping us honest.

And to our adoring fans:

And a final shot of the whole crew:

summer smackdown, round 4

The bonus round. Team Time Trial. Ship Cycling = epic fail.

Brian Hopkins and Pat Hankins - 41:09
Rich Shaffer, Jim Hartnett, Tim Rohrbaugh, Joe Kaehler - 42:55
Wargins, Long and Neslund - 46:00

I'm not sure, but it looks to me like all SMVC guys and one YBR. I guess we know who won. Next year we're going to get this done before school starts. And next year SU is going to get serious.

Quick Post

Before I joke around, I like 1a and 1b and I also agree with Chop that 3b and 3c are very nice as well. Mike's favorite is ok, but not a top choice of mine. As cool as black and white looks I think we need to have both a little blue and red on our jerseys. If it wasn't for Ship we wouldn't be making these so maybe we owe them at least a little color on top of our 13,000 dollars for a year of joy. Just a thought.

Just to clear the air, I'd like to inform anyone who is confused (cough, Cody and Mike) that all of the jersey designs that have the vertical Shippensburg on them look silly.

I still like 1a and 1b because they would look really intimidating at the line. (example) Thor Hushovd with his massive legs but more importantly his frightening black attire wins races before they even start. Who wants to pass a man who isn't afraid to throw you from your bike for a victory sporting a jersey as fierce as 1a and 1b.

this is the one I like

I like the idea of having two jerseys: each the same, but with the white and black reversed.

Obviously not everyone would need to buy both--we'd pick one as the main design, where if you're only going to buy one you'd buy that one--but for those of you buying two, you might as well have a little something to change things up a bit. One design for the shorts, though. A design that would work with either jersey.

Anyway, the kit posted above is my favorite. Room for one sponsor logo on the front (but not as much print as this last year) as well as room on both sleeves. Smaller sponsors can get spots on the back pockets. The collar things could stay or go. Or be solid red. But all in all I think the sort of understated chevron design is quite striking. And as much as I like 4b below, I think we pretty much have to at least make a nod to the school colors.

...

So, I know what Chop and Mike like. No one else has weighed in. Is it ambivalence or fear that keeps you all from commenting?

On this one I'm actually thinking in place of the solid white stripe on the sleeves there would be a "SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY," in the same font as elsewhere, written around the cuff of the sleeve like a stripe.

YBR/SMVC/SUCC Summer Smackdown Round Three -- RESULTS

Yesterday was round three of the Summer Smackdown--a 6.5 mile hill climb up Big Flat. Thirteen hungry participants (well, one wasn't that hungry) toed the line.

RESULTS (updated):

(1) Michael Maret (Ship Cycling)
(2) Nathan Goates (Ship Cycling)
(3) Pat Hankins (SMVC)
(4) Robert Snyder (SMVC)
(5) Brian Hopkins (YBR)
(6) Tim Rohrbaugh (SMVC)
(7) Joe Kaehler (SMVC)
(8) Jim Hartnet (SMVC)
(9) Matt Ciccocioppo (Ship Cycling)
(10) Paul Polensky (YBR)
(11) Rich Schaffer (SMVC)
(12) Chris Snyder (USMC)
(13) Cathy Snyder (SMVC)

A hearty congratulations to the South Mountain Velo Club for being able to field a full team for all three events. An automatic DQ for Ship Cycling and YBR in Rounds 2 & 3. Boo. Hiss.

I can't speak for YBR, but frankly I'm embarrassed Ship Cycling couldn't get four riders out to each event. It would have obviously been easier during the school year, but I'm still embarrassed. (Cody, Joe, Chris, Pete...we needed y'all.)

...

NEXT UP:

(1) A special bonus ROUND FOUR of the Summer Smackdown: The Team Time Trial.

Stay tuned for details on place and confirmation on date, but right now we're planning on August 25, 26, or 27th. Get your team of four together now.

(2) THE (ALMOST) HALF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

If you haven't heard about it yet, read up here. This is going to be great.

Unfortunately, there are about a 1000 weekend conflicts in September, so I'm thinking we schedule for Labor Day. That's Monday, September 7. A few weeks before the real world championships, but I don't want to schedule over the Pine Grove Furnace TT (9/19) or the great cross races going on throughout September.

So save the date! You know you're going to want to get out and do something long on Labor Day anyway, make it The (Almost) Half World Championship.

You. Could. Be. The (Almost) Half Champion of the World!

(Special prizes for the last three finishers. More details to come.)

the (almost) half world championship

Alright, y'all. I've been a' thinking...

** UPDATED 9/23 **

The UCI World Championships are being held this year in Mendrisio, Switzerland, September 23-27. (World Championship events are single-day events, but the larger event is held over many days because there are several categories--TT & RR for Elite Men and Women, and the U23 TT & RR.) This year, the road race course is held over a 8.5 mile circuit with 800 ft of elevation gain per lap. The elite men do 19 laps (163 miles and 15,300 ft of climbing).

One month after the UCI World Championships (we do things a little slow here in south-central) we will host our own, (almost) half world championship. Saturday, October 24.

I've mapped out an 8.8 mile circuit with 740 ft of climbing per lap (as close as I could find to the length and elevation profile of the Mendrisio course--and, frankly, it's pretty darn close).

Since the elite men in Switzerland will do 19 laps for 163 miles, we'll do 9 laps for 79 miles (almost half). The elite men in Switzerland will have climbed 15,300 feet, we'll do 6,700 (almost half).

And so it's The (Almost) Half World Championship!

You can see the map and elevation profile above. Course will run counter-clockwise, which means some left-hand turns and a few straight-through stop signs, but traffic will be low, and after a few times up Horse Killer you'll be too tired to care anyway. The start/finish will be at about where the little red dot is in the picture above.

So anyway...don't stop training. You won't want to miss this one.

You. Could. Be. The (Almost) Half Champion of the World!

(And if you want come come play, but 79 miles with 6,700 ft of climbing sounds a bit much, we might could crown an (almost) quarter world champion as well (5 laps, 44 miles). But one quarter of a crown is going to have a hard time staying on your head...)

From a few weeks ago at the Tuesday nighter:

Let me tell you, I've been pleased as punch with the TNR lately. We seem to have ourselves a fast, committed core group. The other day when we had seven riders contesting the finish... Good stuff.

Disaster Strikes at Deodate

The Deodate race today was on a really enjoyable course, with the exception of the narrow roads and guys who think that it is cool to ride 4 wide, and the weather was perfect. The Cat. 4 race started off pretty slow and, more or less, kept the same speed throughout the whole of the race. It was beginning to look like Mike, Jon and I had a pretty good chance of finishing this race in good positions. Especially Mike, because he needs as many points as he can get in order to race A in the next Collegiate season. Sadly, my race ended early in lap 4 when someone in front of me went down, taking out me and several other riders. I tried like hell to catch back up to the group but the crash had happened on the longest hill of the course and they were just going to fast. I finished the lap and respectfully bowed out with a big painful DNF. So goes life I suppose.

GrandView Grand Prix

Jon, Mike and myself raced in the GrandView Grand Prix on Saturday. In the Cat. 4/5 race, Jon finished 8th and Mike finished 9th. I competed in the Cat. 5 race, finishing in 7th place. Not a bad day for the boys from Ship!

Proposed TNR Route Change

We have been doing the same TNR route since January, and don't get me wrong I love our course, but I think that we should make a minor change. Just after the (watch children) sprint marker we make a right turn which puts us on the road that ends with the highly dangerous turn that everyone hates. Instead of making that right hand turn we should go straight and make the next right which would bring us back around to the same place that we would have gotten to anyway. By doing so we would eliminate the dangerous turn, add a mile and 2 nice little climbs climbs. Also, I think that it will be nice to change it up a little bit. What do you guys think?

tnr 07.07.09 -- pics

A great ride last night at the Tuesday Nighter. Eleven folks toed the line, including first-timers IUP John and Paul from YBR.

Let's see... From left to right, by head, we've got IUP Jon, Rider Big E, Andy B., Jim H., Jon M., Mike M., McChop, YBR Paul, Brian H., & Pat H.

The action picked up after the second sprint line on the second lap. While Jon was napping at the back of the field I jumped up and tried to get Pat and Brian to pull away. But in no time Jon popped up to the action and he and rode away... Despite strong efforts from Pat, Brian, and Big E, the two of us were able to stay away and the race ended in the now usual fashion--Jon opening his can of I-Can-Beat-Anyone-Up-This-Hill at the 200m-to-go fire hydrant, with me limping up behind.

Results:

Jon
Goates
Pat
Big E
Brian
(And I'm sorry I don't know what order everyone else rolled in.)

Points:

Goates (20)
Pat (19)
Jon (18)
Brian...
Big E...

We ended the evening with another quick ride up Big Flat. I love that road...

4/5 crash finish at Millersville

Here is the sprint finish in the Millersville race I did last weekend. I was just in front of the crash. Sami was watching from the sidelines and was scared that I died. I was glad she had fun!

Millersville Road Race

I got 6th in my race. I'm still needing upgrade points so I did the 4/5 race. If I would have gotten a top 3 finish I could have upgraded to Cat three but I decided to really try a break away instead of conserving energy. I'm now four points away from an upgrade I believe.

I almost crashed twice in the first five miles. The field was ridiculously wild to start. Some guy flew into a curve way to fast and basically forced me to push off the guard rail to stay upright and then later I got pushed into the grass and had to bunny hop back onto the course. It pissed me off early so I knew it was going to be a good day. My girlfriend was watching so I chose to break away from the field on the hill that she was at the top of. I was able to solo for about 3 miles or so. It felt grand, it wasn't that long but it was fun.

The sprint at the end was crazy. I was beat so I attacked on the hill right before the finish to open up some room for me. About 100 meters from the finish 5 guys passed went by then BAM!!! I heard like three cracks and then my back wheel got thrown out but I saved it and kept sprinting. I think I was the last guy to survive and everyone else behind me went down. All the injuries were pretty minor but there was a lot of bloody bodies.

race reports

Jon, we need a race report from your exploits this past weekend.

Anyone else racing?

1st Official Summer TNR Challenge

It is a sad day but I believe I will be missing the TNR tomorrow. This is a formal challenge to anyone who would like to beat me. I have not lost in a long time and I believe this would be a good week to develop some tactics to defeat me. Just don't forget, I have no weaknesses. LETS GO SHIP!!!

Cargus Criterium

Well since it was fathers day I decided to race not once but twice! I drove out to Lancaster teammate-less at 7a.m. It wasn't too early but I couldn't sleep the night before. I've been getting better at sleeping and not getting to hyper but Saturday night I tossed and turned for hours. Finally a late night game of NHL 07 at 1:00am settled me down (I lost). Now to the racing- Game plan for 3/4 race-sit in pack and maybe get in a break late
4/5 race- shut-down break aways

9:50- 3/4 race - Started nice, jockeyed up well to top 20 out of a 60+ field. Around lap five a break started to form, I hammered away and got in it, soon caught. Another break forms I hammer up to it, soon caught again. By lap 10 I was already spent, I again failed to even come close to following my plan. I'm still to immature for the 3/4 category. A nice break formed by lap 15 or so and I just sat in the group and that's where I finished.

1:30ish - 4/5 race- I sat under a tree and watched the older gentlemen race as well as all the Cat 4/5 racers warm up. I was out of it and warming up wasn't on my mind. I lined up and found the guy who chewed me out the last crit I did. I was very pleased because I love singling someone out like that. The race started and I immediatly sat on his wheel. I uttered a few words so he remembered me, it was way to much fun. Then he got in a two man break a few laps in. I bridged easily and brought the field with me. His team shot off two other men and I marked each attack. When I get super competive I seem to lose all feeling so luckily the pain from the 3/4 race went away. Anyways, last lap, I sat in on the nameless mean man. He tore off the front with one other guy. This time I made a wonderful decsision not to go with him because I was determined for a field sprint. Going into the last turn I got boxed in pretty well and I was nervous he was going to win, I pushed my way through and had a huge spring up the last straight and passed a lot of people including the mean man. I got fourth and missed second by a hair. I had a ton of fun in this race. I also won 40 bucks --- party. Now I'm looking forward to the TNR and another uphill sprint!

Happy Fathers Day!

Want to say Happy Fathers today to all those followers of the blog who are fathers!!!

I was able to get out and ride with my dad today for about an hour, while sporting our matching Ship Cycling Kits....even though down here in Baltimore County Maryland, no one knows where the hell Shippensburg is!!

I hope all of you are having a great summer so far, and remember get out there and ride like the wind.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

Hi all, in general, we have not not really been blogging very much so I figured that I would give an update.
I am proud to announce that, since January, as of today I broke 3,000 miles. My goal is to double that by the end of the year.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to do any races so far this summer. Basically, my pay checks have been barely enough to live on and between rent, bills and groceries, I have not had enough money to come up with the entry fees. I am hopeful that I will be able to race soon.
Friday I rode to my parents house in the rain and rode back again on Sunday in the sun. I thought that my arms were dark enough that I didn't need to put on any sunblock and it turns out that I was wrong. I burned pretty bad and needless to say, I learned my lesson.
Although I couldn't keep up with Jon, The Goat and Martin today I felt great and had a really good ride. After the race I went and climbed Big Flat. I hope that everyone is having a good summer and I hope to see you all at the meeting on Friday.

Race in Philly

Yesterday me and a few friends rode 30 miles down through Fairmont Park and into philly to watch the race. Floyd Landis did pretty well but got outsprinted on the last lap. While I was watching the race and noticed a guy ride by with the shippensburg shorts on but didnt recognize him! Hope everyone is enjoying their summer!
